Forex PIP Calculator

Convert market movements into real money. Learn what PIPs are, how they're calculated, and how much each one is worth based on your trade.

Why do you need this calculator?

If you're getting started in Forex or trading, one of the first concepts you need to master is the PIP. It's the minimum unit of movement in a currency pair, and understanding it is key to knowing how much you gain or lose on every trade.

With this calculator you can instantly find the monetary value of any market movement — no manual math or complicated formulas needed.

Who is this for? Beginner and intermediate traders who need to quickly calculate the impact of a price movement before opening or closing a trade.

📐 What is a PIP?

PIP stands for "Percentage in Point" or "Price Interest Point". It's the smallest price change a currency pair can make. In most pairs, 1 PIP equals a movement in the fourth decimal place (0.0001).

Example: EUR/USD
1.0850 → 1.0870
Price moved up 20 PIPs

For pairs involving the Japanese yen (like USD/JPY), 1 PIP is measured at the second decimal place (0.01), because the yen has a much lower value relative to the dollar.

Pair Example price 1 PIP equals Value per PIP (1 lot)
EUR/USD 1.0850 0.0001 $10 USD
GBP/USD 1.2640 0.0001 $10 USD
USD/JPY 149.50 0.01 ≈ $9.35 USD
USD/MXN 17.1200 0.0001 ≈ $5.20 USD
XAU/USD 2,350.00 0.01 ≈ $0.10 USD

📦 What are lots in Forex?

A lot is the number of currency units you're buying or selling. The lot size directly determines how much each PIP is worth in real money.

Lot type Size Units Value per PIP (EUR/USD)
Micro lot 0.01 1,000 $0.10 USD
Mini lot 0.10 10,000 $1.00 USD
Standard lot 1.00 100,000 $10.00 USD
💡 Tip for beginners: If you're still learning, start trading with micro lots (0.01). That way each PIP is worth cents and you can practice without risking large amounts.

🧭 How to use the calculator?

Calculating the value of your PIPs is very simple. Just follow these three steps:

1

Select the instrument

Choose the currency pair or asset you're trading. Each instrument has a different PIP value.

2

Enter the number of PIPs

Type how many PIPs the price moved (or how many you expect it to move). Decimals are allowed.

3

Choose the lot size

Select your trade volume. The larger the lot, the greater the value of each PIP.

📝 Practical example

Say you trade EUR/USD with 1 standard lot and the price moves 30 PIPs in your favor:

Calculation: $10 (value per PIP) × 1 (lot) × 30 (PIPs) = $300.00 USD

That means you made $300 on that move. If the price had moved against you, you would have lost the same amount.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the values in this calculator accurate? +

The values are approximate and based on reference quotes. The exact value of each PIP may vary depending on the real-time exchange rate, your broker, and the base currency of your account. Use it as a guide to plan your trades.

What's the difference between a PIP and a point? +

A PIP is the fourth decimal place (0.0001) in most pairs. A point (or pipette) is the fifth decimal place (0.00001) — one tenth of a PIP. Many brokers display prices with 5 decimal places, but traders typically count in PIPs.

Why does the PIP value change depending on the pair? +

Because the value depends on the quote currency (the second one in the pair). In EUR/USD the quote currency is the dollar, so the value is calculated directly in USD. In USD/MXN, it's calculated in pesos and then converted to dollars, which changes the final value.

How many PIPs should I risk per trade? +

It depends on your strategy and risk management plan. A common rule is to never risk more than 1–2% of your capital per trade. Use this calculator to translate your stop loss PIPs into a dollar amount and verify it fits your plan.

Can I use this calculator for gold or indices? +

Yes. We've included XAU/USD (Gold) and US30 (Dow Jones) as available instruments. Keep in mind that for these assets the concept of "PIP" is measured differently, but the calculator is already adjusted to give you an approximate value.
